Washita Arkansas Stone, 8

Washita Arkansas Stone, 8
These are the finest of the natural stones, known the world over for their unique crystalline structure. True novaculite, these stones remove less metal than manmade stones and polish while sharpening. The resulting edge is longer lasting and sharper, achieved with fewer stones and less effort. Arkansas stones must be used with a lubricant. It keeps the stones surface from clogging, reduces the effort required to sharpen and keeps it clean. Oil or water may be used, but if you decide to go with oil as a lubricant, you must continue to use oil since water will no longer be absorbed by an oil soaked stone. Washita stones are the softest and most aggressive. Used for taking out large nicks, re-beveling and flattening. Stone colors may vary.

postheadericon Norton Crystolon Combination Oilstone, Fine/Coarse, 1 x 2 x 8"

Cheap Norton Crystolon Combination Oilstone, Fine/Coarse, 1 x 2 x 8" For Sale

Norton Crystolon Combination Oilstone, Fine/Coarse, 1 x 2 x 8" Overview

The Norton Crystolon 100/280-grit combination oilstone is made of silicon carbide with 100 grit on one face for repairing cutting edges and 280 grit on the opposite face for sharpening and maintaining them; it sharpens to moderate tolerances with minimal loading when it is more important to sharpen the blade quickly than to produce a fine cutting edge. This oilstone is used to restore cutting edges on straight-edged tools, such as chisels, knives, plane blades, and precision instruments. The stone is prefilled with oil to save time and eliminate the need to presoak it prior to use. The oil prevents metal from bonding with the abrasive surface by flushing away dislodged abrasive and metal chips.

This silicon carbide stone is fast cutting, and offers effective sharpening, even under light pressure. It is created by grading silicon carbide to a consistent particle size and blending it with bonding agents. It is then molded and surface-finished. This 1 x 8 x 2 inch (H x W x D) stone, suitable for bench use, is harder and more durable than a waterstone. (H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.) It conforms to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) abrasive grit standards.

Sharpening stones, or whetstones, are abrasive surfaces used to sharpen and hone the edges of steel cutting implements, such as chisels, knives, scissors, hand scrapers, and plane blades. Sharpening is the process of creating or re-establishing a cutting edge by grinding away portions of the metal to adjust the angle of the edge and reform the shape. Honing removes small imperfections. Stones can be flat, for working flat edges, or shaped, for edges that are more complex. Sharpening stones are made of natural or synthetic materials that range from softer to harder, and are categorized by the size of their abrasive particles, known as grit. A stone with a coarser grit is used when more metal needs to be removed (e.g., when sharpening a nicked or very dull blade); the stone with the finest grit produces the sharpest edge. Where numbers are assigned to specify grit, they range from coarser grit (low) to finer grit (high). Some sharpening stones are designed for use with a lubricating liquid, some can be used dry, and others can be used either wet or dry. When used with lubricating liquid, a sharpening stone can be called a waterstone or an oilstone, based on the lubricant required.

Norton Abrasives manufactures sanding, grinding, and polishing abrasives, and has been located in the United States since 1885. Norton, now a brand of Saint-Gobain, meets ISO 9000 and 14001 certification for quality and environmental management standards.

Norton IM 313CIS Soft Arkansas Sharpening Kit

The Norton IM313CIS soft Arkansas sharpening kit includes a 100-grit silicon carbide, a 240-grit aluminum oxide, and a 600-grit natural Arkansas stone, a self-contained three-stone bench sharpening unit with a lid and no-slip rubber feet, a reservoir, an angle guide, and a 16 oz. bottle of sharpening stone oil for lubrication. In the top of the bench sharpening unit, a rotating axis holds the stones firmly in place, protecting them against breakage, and bringing the desired stone into position for sharpening. The base of the sharpening unit is a reservoir that allows submersion of the unused stones, keeping them clean and saturated. The angle guide helps to position a tool correctly for sharpening. The three oilstones in this kit are used sequentially to restore cutting edges on straight-edged tools, such as knives, chisels, plane blades, and precision instruments; the silicon carbide stone is suitable for repairing a cutting edge, while the aluminum oxide stone is suitable for sharpening and maintaining the edge, and the Arkansas stone produces a honed and polished cutting edge.

The sharpening stone oil meets FDA requirements for use near food, and consists of pharmacopeia-grade mineral oil formulated with the correct lubricity for oilstone sharpening. It prevents metal from bonding with the abrasive surface by flushing away dislodged abrasive and metal chips. Each stone is also prefilled with oil to save time and eliminate the need to presoak it prior to use. The silicon carbide stone is fast-cutting and offers effective sharpening, even under light pressure. The aluminum oxide stone has a tough fracture- and wear-resistant grit that is more durable than silicon carbide and capable of sharpening to very close tolerances. The “soft” Arkansas stone is used for fine sharpening and honing, especially after sharpening with synthetic stones.

Both synthetic stones are created by grading material to a consistent particle size and blending it with bonding agents, and then molding and surface-finishing it. Arkansas stone is a natural hard abrasive stone that is mined for use. It is harder than most synthetic stones. These unusually large 1/2 x 11-1/2 x 2-1/2 inch (H x W x D) oilstones, which are suitable for bench use, are harder and more durable than a waterstone. (H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.) The synthetic silicon carbide and aluminum oxide oilstones conform to American National Standards Institute (ANSI) abrasive grit standards. There are no industry-wide standards for hardness, particle size, or color of natural sharpening stones, but Norton’s standards for its natural stones have become benchmarks.

Norton 24336 Japanese-Style Combination Waterstone 4000/8000 Grit, 8-Inch by 3-Inch by 1-Inch Overview

The Norton 24336 Japanese-style 4000/8000-grit combination waterstone creates an abrasive slurry for effective sharpening, with 4000 grit on one face for maintaining and refining a cutting edge, and 8000 grit on the opposite face for polishing cutting edges; this 1 x 8 x 3 inch (H x W x D) stone, suitable for bench use, cleans up easily with water, and comes encased in a blue plastic hinged box. (H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.) The box protects the waterstone and provides a reservoir to keep it moist. The removable box lid, with no-slip rubber feet, acts as a sharpening station to hold the waterstone in place during bench use.

This synthetic waterstone is created by grading abrasive material to a consistent particle size and blending it with bonding agents. It is then molded and surface-finished. Waterstones have a finer grit and softer bond than oilstones, and use water as the lubricant to develop a slurry, a thin paste of abrasive grains and water that removes metal with less pressure than an oilstone requires. Cleanup is easier than with oil as lubricant. The use of waterstones originated in Japan, where such stones occur naturally. As a result, some synthetic waterstones may be called “Japanese-style.” However, whether natural or synthetic, and whether labeled “Japanese-style,” all waterstones have the same basic characteristics. This stone conforms to the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) for waterstones.

Sharpening stones, or whetstones, are abrasive surfaces used to sharpen and hone the edges of steel cutting implements such as chisels, knives, scissors, hand scrapers, and plane blades. Sharpening is the process of creating or re-establishing a cutting edge by grinding away portions of the metal to adjust the angle of the edge and reform the shape. Lansky Diamond Deluxe Sharpening System with Extra Coarse, Coarse, Medium and Fine Hones

  • Includes extra-coarse, coarse, medium, and fine diamond hones
  • Controlled-angle sharpening system with 17-, 20-, 25-, and 30-degree angle options
  • Color-coded stones with finger-grooved safety holders; specially formulated honing oil
  • Includes precision-engineered knife clamp and custom-molded storage/carrying case

Lansky Diamond Deluxe Sharpening System with Extra Coarse, Coarse, Medium and Fine Hones
Sharpen all of your knives with ease with the Lansky Deluxe Diamond four-stone sharpening system. The system comes with four sharpening hones of different coarseness: an extra-coarse diamond (70 grit), a coarse diamond (120 grit), a medium diamond (280 grit), and a fine diamond (600 grit). As a result, you'll have the tools to sharpen virtually any type of kitchen, hobby, or garden knife. Diamond kits are very aggressive, and are the sharpener of choice for quickly setting an edge or resetting the edge to a different angle. That's because diamonds remove steel much faster than their alumina oxide counterparts.

The system is easy to use, with a controlled-angle sharpening system built into the precision-engineered knife clamp. Simply secure the knife and choose your preferred angle and you'll receive a professional razor-sharp edge every time. Each of the four angle options is suitable for a different knife type. The severe 17-degree angle is recommended for razor blades, X-Acto blades, scalpels, and similar tools, as it provides an extremely sharp but delicate edge. The 20-degree angle is commonly used for higher-quality blades, making it ideal for kitchen cutlery and filet knives. The 25-degree angle is recommended for knives that need a durable, sharp edge, such as hunting and outdoor knives. And the 30-degree angle is recommended for heavy-duty knives that commonly cut cardboard, wire, or carpets.

Each honing stone is color-coded, with finger-grooved safety holders to keep your hand secure. The kit also comes with a guide rod for each honing stone, specially formulated honing oil, extra-long knife clamp screws, easy-to-follow multilingual instructions, and a custom molded storage/carrying case to hold all system components. Knife enthusiasts should consider investing in an Extra Fine or Super Sapphire ceramic hone to polish your blade to a mirror finish and a serrated hone for serrated knives.
